         EARTHWORK EXCAVATION FOR BUILDINGS




SCOPE

                  This section consists of specifications pertaining to all clearing, excavation and back filling necessary to carry out the specified building works.
REFERENCE
                 All material, methods and workmanship shall comply with the relevant British Standards and Codes of Practice.    BS 6031   ;   Code of Practice for Earthworks      BS 8000   ;    Code of Practice for Excavation and Filling       

APPROVALS
                    The Contractor shall submit method statement for excavation protection, dewatering of excavations and back filling for the Engineer’s approval before commencement of the work

POINTS CONSIDER BEFORE EXCAVATION

  •  Latest approved site layout drawing and architectural drawings  available at site for the               construction
  •  The Project Engineer shall check the Tender Drawing with the latest approved  drawing  if         any    variations notice to project manager 
  •  should be checked for existing services
  •  If any existing services are available, trial holes will be dug by hand to expose the underground utilities and verify exact locations.
  • Any services or any other observation which are suspected notice to project engineer.   
  • Adequate protection shall be provided to the existing services / structure as per the method approved by the Consulting Engineer, to ensure that no damages are imparted  to them during  the execution of work.1.   
  • A site survey shall be conducted to record existing ground level conditions, mark underground utility locations and excavation limits.
  • A bench mark shall be established at site at some permanent, visible and undisturbed  location,  so as to enable the cross checking of levels at any time. The bench mark shall remain intact till   the completion of the project
  • The bench mark approved by Consulting Engineer
  •  work permit required for the execution
  • Any vegetation, rubbish and other objectionable materials available on site shall be  cleared and stored disposal area
  • The marking shall be provided with suitable marking materials for clearly identifying the boundaries of the proposed facility
  • Inspection request shall be forwarded to the Consulting Engineer for checking and approval
  • Work shall commence at site only after the receipt of written approval on the inspection request submitted
  •  temporary  road or working platform should  provide better access for vehicle and   equipments. 
  • EXECUTION
  • Foundation pits  shall be excavated according to the approved drawings and shall be of sufficient size to  placing of footings/ground beams shown with full horizontal beds. Rounded or undercut corners and edges will not be permitted.
  • Excavation shall be carried to the elevation shown on the drawings  Exca­vation depths for foundations shall be only as directed by the Engineer. final depth as per soil investigation report
  • All excavation material should be disposed  outside the site as directed by the Engineer/Municipal authorities.
  • the depth of excavation by mechanical means shall be limited to 20 cms higher than the required level. The last 20 cms  shall be removed manually
  • if presence of soft spots,sloping ground,slate,mud stone,if any other bring attention to consulting engineer and further excavation directed by the engineer  
  •  SUPPORTING 
  •   The Contractor shall be responsible at all times for carrying out excavation operations in a safe          and pru­dent manner so that workmen and the public will be protected from unreasonable hazards at all times.
  • Adequate vertical sheeting shall be used to protect employees, until completion of the work, to  prevent damage to adjacent ground and structures..
  • The sides of all excavations shall be adequately sup­ported with planking, strutting or close sheeting as necessary to prevent slippage. and Edges of excavations must be kept clear for excavated material, vehicles and other loads.
